The main scientific direction of the Department of Infectious Diseases MPF is the study of the mechanisms of adaptation and intoxication syndromes in acute intestinal bacterial infections (AIBI) and viral hepatitis during the development of the infectious process. A new concept of intoxication syndrome has been developed in AIBI, a fundamentally new approach to the relief of intoxication syndrome by pharmacological effects on the mechanisms responsible for its occurrence.

At the same time, methods for the rapid diagnosis of intestinal infections are being improved on the basis of the enzyme immunoassay method; studied the adhesive properties of microorganisms that cause bacterial food poisoning and are initial factors in the occurrence of intoxication.

The Department of Infectious Diseases of the MPF is headed by Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation Elena V. Volchkova.
Under the guidance of Professor E.V. Volchkova completed and defended 2 doctoral and 15 Ph.D. theses, she is the author of more than 180 scientific papers, including 2 monographs, 10 teaching aids, co-author of 2 textbooks, manuals for doctors, programs and reference book on infectious diseases.

The department trains students of medical, pediatric, medical and preventive, dental faculties, students of the faculty of higher nursing education and psychological and social work, postgraduate training of specialists (internship, residency, postgraduate).
Forms of education: full-time, part-time. Target as well as paid forms of postgraduate education are included.
Within the framework of the Program for the formation of the innovative educational space of the First Moscow State Medical University Sechenov developed a program of discipline of choice (electives) “Actual issues of HIV infection” and a package of test and measurement materials for it.

The main clinical base of the department is the infectious clinical hospital №2 of Moscow.

The staff of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, educated in the experience of his teachers, and in modern conditions strives to preserve the best traditions of previous generations of clinicians and teachers, passes on his experience to the younger generation of future doctors who will have to face new types of infectious pathology and find a solution to many health problems to ensure the health of the nation in the XXI century.
